    Location (Google Maps): Meet at the roadside parking on Coolihans Sideroad, km 35.0 Map 17, near where the Trail crosses the road. This is just west of the intersection of Glen Haffy Road and Coolihans Sideroad (even though the GPS coordinates are showing just to the east). It is best to aim for arriving around 8:15, so we can start hiking as close to 8:30 am as possible. Thanks!

    Description

    For today’s hike, we’ll follow the main Bruce Trail and conservation trails to make an approximately 6 km route. The pace will be leisurely in parts, so you can take a moment to enjoy the carpet of spring flowers, seemingly changing weekly this time of year. Consider the following as you prepare for the hike: a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, hiking boots/shoes, poles. You are encouraged to bring water and a snack as there will be a short break. No dogs please. You can expect a reminder/update message one or two days before the hike.

    Description

    We will carpool to the carpark on Cty.Rd. 91 (map 22, km 37.4) and follow the trail north past interesting crevices and amazing views over Georgian Bay. We will pause for a vista at the “wedding tree” before looping back to the road for a peek at the historic Franks Lime Kiln. We will then head south on the trail past more crevices and forest for a look at the huge Walkers Quarry before returning to our cars via a blue side trail. We will have completed a 5 km double loop with lots of nice views.

    Description

    We will follow the Red Hill Creek Trail and Bruce Trail to Felker’s Falls and follow a similar route back to the parking lot.  Bring water and a snack .  Trails may be muddy and slippery so poles may be needed.  Please arrive by 9:45 am as we will be on the trail by 10:00 am sharp.

    If cancelled due to rain, I will notify you by email the evening prior to the hike.  If you cancel after 4:00 pm on the day prior to the hike, use the contact information I will send you by email a day or two before the hike.

    Easy, Moderate hike – Fletcher’s Creek Preserve is an abandoned quarry site that has been rehabilitated and is located at the headwaters of the Spencer Creek watershed

    We will  loop hike through the preserve as well as an adjacent trail that also was part of the quarry back in the day-lots of local history- it was the area swimming hole and some still use it.

    Each Friday we will explore different neighbourhoods, trails and parkland throughout Historic Niagara-on-the-Lake.

    Moderate pace with some weeks entirely on sidewalks and roads while others may include a mix of trails and paved pathways. Great way to build up endurance for longer more strenuous hikes.

    Prepare for cooler windy conditions on open parkland and along Lake Ontario and Niagara River trails.

    Expectations: Expect to be on-trail for 7-9 hours each day, depending on the daily distance. Time on the trail may vary based on terrain, conditions, and the pace of the group. Breaks will be taken for lunch, snacks, photography, and to appreciate the scenery.

    Meeting Time: Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time.

    Participant Requirements:

    • Intermediate/experienced hikers, comfortable with longer distances and elevation gains.

    • Proper hiking boots, layered clothing, and wet weather gear required. Hiking poles recommended.

    • Breaks for photography and appreciation of local flora and fauna.

    Description

    Join us for the second hike of a 6 part end-to-end of the Niagara section.  Our route starts in the Woodend Conservation Area. As we walk along the top of the escarpment, we’ll have lovely views of the vineyards and orchards below.  We’ll then cross over the 3rd and 4th Welland Canals to bring us to St. Catharines, where we’ll have to do a bit of urban hiking before getting back into a naturalized quarry area and the woods surrounding Brock University.

    We will have a refreshment stop before heading back to Toronto.

    Bring a packed lunch and two litres of water, as well as rain/sun/bug protection as needed.

    Dropout point at 9.5 kms.

    Description

    We will hike into the accessible crevices to see fossils (no dinosaurs!) and the lush mix of species that are at home along the rocky shelves of the Niagara Escarpment.  Roughly 14,000 years ago the entire area was covered by glaciers and we will chat with a professional geologist about how the melting water formed today’s landscape.  There will be time to admire the views and trees.  The white cedars, some more than 1,000 years old, clinging to weathered rock faces are impressive.

    Directions: From Hwy 10 take Boston Mills Rd. 6 km west to the dead end just west of Mississauga Rd. An alternative is to take Mississauga Rd. north from King St. about 3 km, turn left on Boston Mills Rd. for about 400 m

    Description

    There and back on both the Main Trail and the Rockside Side Trail, about 3.8 km, with some hills, puddles, mud and rugged sections. Sturdy boots and hiking poles are recommended. The pace will be slow at times with numerous stops to observe the spring ephemerals, listen to bird song and take photos. Bring your binoculars, camera and cellphone. Apps like Merlin, Seek, and iNaturalist will help identify flora and fauna along the route.
