Key words for this walk — forest, stream and some long, steepish sections. Walkers are encouraged to take the steepish sections at their own pace – some may prefer to maintain a steady pace drinking in the forest air and some may prefer to pause for breaths and absorb nature. This hike will be a discovery hike along the Cottonwood Loop – we’ll take our time, and see what we can find. This trail is a stand-alone trail, separate from the rest of the Bruce Trail. We’ll hike through forests, past a particularly large cottonwood tree, and to a lookout along a ridge. This property is the original location of the Rows homestead – their farmhouse can be seen at Moreston Village at Grey Roots. The Cottonwood Loop counts towards the Junior Hiker badge and is also featured in Ron Savage’s new book, Exploring Sydenham. There will be sufficient time to find the related code en route.
As we’ll be taking our time, this hike is suitable for families, new hikers, and anyone wanting a more leisurely hike. We’ll likely take an hour or two, depending on the group – dress in layers, bring a snack, and wear good footwear. Given that December can be variable, an email re: trail conditions to expect will be sent out prior to our hike together.

This is the ninth and final! section in our Cairn to Cairn hike series this fall. Heather Murch and Steven White are co-leading these hikes. Strong hikers are welcome to join for sections or individual hikes, but will need to register for each end to end section series. This series of hikes are 20-24 kms per day and due to parking or hike length, some hikes cover more than one section.Note we start our series through Short Hills Provincial Park due to park restrictions for hunting.
We meet at 7:30 – hikers should be ready to shuttle at that time. We will take turns and everyone is expected to participate in the shuttling. Any parking costs will be shared. There is another End to End hike series posted by Steven for those who want to hike and receive a special Stained Glass badge.
Hikers should wear layered clothing, bring rainwear, poles, hiking boots, hat, water, snacks, lunch, bug spray, sunblock and be prepared for changing weather this time of year.
Hiking itinerary with parking coordinates will be emailed to registered hikers.
