The rail trail in Carolinian Canada is one of Canada’s best, following the Lynn River to Lake Erie, located on the former CNR rail line which was established along the pioneer river trail in 1873 as the Lake Huron and Port Dover Railway. The rail line was abandoned in 1988. The Lynn Valley Trail passes through a number of different habitats including; mixed woods, wetlands, open grassland and agricultural land, all along the scenic Lynn River. Interesting examples of Carolinian flora and fauna may be found along the trail. The autumn colours should be upon us and you may see the famous Osage Orange, species: Maclura Pomifera along Silver Lake. We will take a little detour to see Port Dover’s hidden gem; Lynn River Waterfalls and the luxury Clonmel Castle. Who would have guessed! We lunch in Port Dover and we retrace our steps to Simcoe. Bring a lunch or head to one of the local fish restaurants in Port Dover.

Length: 24 km (6- 6 1/2 hrs) with snack break & lunch stop.
Hike level: 2 (moderate). we will hike at 4 km/hr. Flat terrain, some paved & some stone dust.

    • From Toronto about a 2 hour drive, add a little extra time if you are unfamiliar with the area.

What to wear and bring: Bring water, snacks and lunch. Or you may want to purchase a fish lunch at one of the local restaurants. Be prepared for weather conditions for this day. Hiking shoes or boots recommended. Hiking poles if you use them.

    Description

Come and join me for a family-friendly hike in honour of Bruce Trail Day!  We will use the Limehouse Side Trail, the Black Creek Side Trail, and the main trail to make a lovely 4 km loop within Limehouse Conservation Area.  Approximately halfway through our hike we will leave the trail in order to enjoy refreshments and visit displays put on by the Toronto Bruce Trail Club at Limehouse Memorial Hall (and so we can have a washroom break, if needed) before returning to the trail to complete our loop.  There will be a scavenger hunt to complete while hiking, and individuals who would like to work on their “Biodiversity Naturalist Badge” (https://torontobrucetrailclub.org/the-trail/badges) are encouraged to do so during this hike – I love spotting interesting flora, fauna, and fungi whenever I’m on the Bruce Trail so I would be happy to help hikers in their quest for this badge.

Children under 13 years of age are encouraged to join their parents/guardians on this hike so they can fulfill the requirements for the Toronto Bruce Trail Club’s Youth Badge (https://torontobrucetrailclub.org/the-trail/badges) – all family members who are planning on joining us should register for the hike, including children.  You should bring enough water and food for a 2-hour hike, comfortable footwear with good traction, appropriate clothing for the weather, and a big smile because we’re going to have a great time!

Everyone is welcome – I hope to see you there!

    Description

Help to welcome SBTC’s Youth Hiking Program with a hike from GSCA to Inglis Falls. With a leisurely pace this hike is suitable for families and new hikers, and will generally follow the main trail from the Conservation Authority to Inglis Falls and back. On Discovery Hikes we see what we can find along the way. Topics may include geology, history, or plants and animals depending on what we find. Participants can feel free to point things out or ask questions as we explore along the trail. We’ll check out how this stretch of trail differs now as compared to other seasons.

Anyone under 16 must be joined by an adult for this hike. Youth under 18 may be unaccompanied if a parent or guardian has contacted the Hike Leader.

There are some uphill portions along this hike (we’ll take our time), and there may be some slippery or mucky patches depending on conditions. Wear comfy, trail-appropriate shoes (runners are fine), bring a snack, and look forward to checking out the Sydenham River Valley in autumn! Unfortunately dogs can not attend these guided hikes.

Carpooling may be available, upon request. Please click the link or send a note to YouthHikingCoordinator@sydenhambrucetrail.ca to get in touch if you have any questions, or are having difficulty with registration.
